Stem Cells Marketing Claim Triggers Joint Statement

The phrase “stem cells”  reminds me of a mortgage security during the real estate bubble, no one understood it but everyone wanted one. Surgeons around the world are marketing and offering untested stem cell procedures as therapy or cure for autism, cancer, heart disease, breast augmentation and much more. If you search the internet you will find marketing claims such as “stem cells enriched”, “stem cells enhanced”, and “stem cells infused” procedures. Many surgeons offering these procedures state their seems to be a correlation between stem cells and health improvement they observe on their patients. At the same time they admit to not understanding how it works and if stem cells are actually improving lives. The lack of understanding has led to many deaths where patients have been overly infused with stem cells. This is why the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) have issued a joint statement to protect consumers. Part of their statement includes this warning to the public: “The marketing and promotion of stem cell procedures in aesthetic surgery is not adequately supported by clinical evidence at this time. While we remain enthusiastic about the future potential of stem cell therapies in aesthetic surgical procedures, unsubstantiated claims for such therapies will harm patients and tarnish the reputation of the industry” We are proud that our very own Roger Khouri, MD participated in drafting this joint statement with the two societies. Miami Breast Center will be publishing a new page on the website regarding stem cells and our stand on this subject. Every week we receive questions regarding stem cells and this page will help many visitors answer those questions[/p]

FDA Report On Possible Complications From Breast Implants

Well, it’s no surprise to us that a new report was  issued last week by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which details the possible complications of breast implants. Breast implants are not lifetime devices (duh)… according to the FDA, and the longer women have them, the more likely they are to have complications, and the more likely the implants will need to be removed. Which for me personally is a bummer since I didn’t hear of Dr. Khouri in time and have those implants in me.  The FDA says that one in 10 patients will need their implants removed within 10 years if they got a breast augmentation. The risk rises for breast cancer patients who get implants for breast reconstruction with as many as one in two patients needing their implants removed within 10 years.  Oh great.  🙁 But there is good news thanks to Dr. Roger Khouri and his breakthrough reconstruction procedure that is changing the way women reconstruct their breasts after breast cancer or for cosmetic reasons. It requires no major surgery, no new incisions or scars.  I want the world to know about this!!! WIth Dr. Khouri’s technique, there are no complications from having a foreign object in your body that will likely need to be removed. This is a long–term solution to common breast implant problems. His breakthrough Fat Transfer procedure is a comfort to patients who had breast implants in the past and are now experiencing problems. The FDA report reconfirms what we already knew: with Dr. Khouri’s fat-transfer technique, the patient will never have to worry about needing a re-operation or removal again because her new breast(s) will be created from her own fat. No foreign objects will be implanted into her body. And you get lipo…take it from here and put it there.  It’s a beautiful thing.
