Breast Reconstruction Testimonial:

From: Miami, Florida
Patient Type: Immediate Breast Reconstruction
Patient History: Unilateral Mastectomy / Immediate Reconstruction

Nela: I made the decision to go ahead and do the mastectomy. And so then I asked him, OK, so obviously for reconstruction, what are my options? The first thing he said was implants, and I said no. I already knew I wasn't doing implants. And the second thing he said, I read it on the internet, was that they had some procedures like some flap procedures where they actually take sections of muscle and fat from other parts of your body and transfer to the breasts. And I wasn't about to do that, mainly because I like to swim and I just, one, I thought it was; it mutilates your body. And, secondly, I really like to swim and I wanted to keep all my muscles where they were.

So, I said no. And I said, well, I, and I had read about, not necessarily Dr. Khouri, but just some autologous fat transfers. You know: fat grafting. And I said, what about, like, of your own fat? And he said, well, actually there is one physician in town and that's what he's doing. He's all over; he's the guy to go to. So I went to see Dr. Khouri and he examined me, and of course he said I was a good candidate and of course he would be willing to do it. So I went and got back to my oncologist and we scheduled my mastectomy. So, my mastectomy with immediate reconstruction took place December 9th of 2010 and it took about, I guess, like, five and a half hours total. But when I woke up, I actually had, like, a small breast.

I'm a 34B normally; naturally. And I woke up; I was just a tad bit smaller, but I had something. A month after; a little under a month after my mastectomy I started to wear the BRAVA, so I started wearing it January 5th, I think it was, which is the day I went back to work. I started wearing it that night, and I wore it all the way through, and I kept seeing Dr. Khouri every two or three weeks and he was; you know; my progress. My second fat grafting took place February 17th and, you know, the fat grafting is where they take; they harvest fat from parts of your body, and basically what the procedure is they inject it in, not with one huge, like, swoosh of the syringe, but little teeny weenie, tiny, tiny, tiny little little shots of little little teenie.

So, you have all these little prick marks on your breasts, you know, but that's good because he's evening it out and he wants it to look natural and not just big old; you know: shove a big needle full of fat that it could just kind of go all over. So, it's kind of like, I mean, I'm probably going overboard but it's a little bit artistic if you want to think of it that way. But it kind of is, because he is kind of putting the fat exactly where he thinks you need it. You know, I continued to see Dr. Khouri and then once, about two or three days after that, I started wearing a BRAVA again. And, you know, I was healing very nicely and I was actually; my; I would say that my left breast was about 85 percent of where my right breast was, so I was almost really there.

I mean, you know, when I went back to work people wouldn't really know that I had a mastectomy unless I mentioned something, because it was like, "You're kidding." They'd stare and me and they'd go, "You're kidding me. Where? Like, how? You look the same." So, there was no really, no, there was no noticeable appearance thing or anything like that. I had my last surgery Thursday. Today is Sunday. So, I don't know, 48; 72 hours ago. And I feel pretty good. I'm done. He did the last fat grafting. He just kind of finished up the areas where, you know, it needed a bit more fat. He also added bonuses that, in addition to the liposuction, which totally, totally rocks, and is totally one of the; I hate to say one of the bright things about this also, is that he also lifted my right breast, which is kind of nice, because now, you know, at least, my right one was a little bit lower.

With this technique, right after the surgery, yeah, your breast is numb and you don't have sensation. But your sensation comes back. So, you know, right now, I mean, I'm only like a couple of days out, but once the swelling goes down and all that, you know, I had a sensation before I had my third fat grafting. So, I think that's an important part of people's lives and I think that you end up with tissue that looks natural and it moves with your body like the way your body moves and you have your sensation back. So I think it's the best of all possible worlds, and you get the liposuction.
