Dr. Raul Cortes is our newest member of the Miami Breast Center, recruited by Dr. Roger Khouri from New York City to join this renowned group. He is triple certified in Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery and General Surgery. He is double boarded by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery and holds an additional Certificate in the Subspecialty of Surgery of the Hand. He is also active Fellow within the American College of Surgeons.
He is a graduate of numerous prestigious training programs including the Harvard Plastic Surgery Program, UCLA fellowship program in Hand and Microsurgery and the University of Michigan Hospital General Surgery program. He is a Clinical Instructor in Surgery at Weil Cornell Medical College, Assistant Clinical Professor at the Mt. Sinai Icahn School of Medicine and holds affiliations in New York, New Jersey and Florida.
After graduating with Distinction from Duke University, he attended Emory University School of Medicine where he graduated with Cum Laude honors. Dr. Cortes then received his surgical training over 13 years including two residencies, two fellowships and with experiences across four continents. He is a member of multiple national and regional medical societies such as the American Society of Plastic Surgery, American Society of Surgery of the Hand, the American College of Surgeons, as well as the New York State Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Dr. Cortes is committed to education and has maintained academic affiliations teaching residents and medical students at both Weill Cornell Medical School and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. His passion for teaching afforded him the honor of teaching awards by both medical students from Harvard Medical School and residents from Mt. Sinai Hospital Plastic Surgery Program. In addition, his interests in research led him to a Clinical Research Fellowship in the field of Fetal Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco where he worked under the found of the field, Dr. Michael Harrison. Dr. Cortes has a strong interest in medical mission trips and completed a mission in Cartagena, Colombia working with children with congenital facial deformities through volunteer work with the Save the Children Foundation.
