After reviewing the options following my left mastectomy, I had pretty much decided against breast reconstruction. However, when I heard about this minimally invasive, outpatient option with low risk of complications, I was willing to give it a try.

As a breast cancer survivor , and after living with bilateral mastectomy for close to five years and refusing to have an aggressive reconstructive procedure. Brava was truly a god send opportunity for me to feel like a complete woman again. The outpatient procedures with minimal down time, offer to be the ideal answer to my prayers and the results came immediately. I thank god for having found Roger K. Khouri, MD, FACS who performed this procedure and assisted me in having a more normal life.

In January of 2010, I had a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction.  The only reconstruction options that were offered to me were the latissimus dorsi flap or implants.  Not wanting an additional surgery site, I went with the implants and four months later, tissue expanders were replaced with 500 cc silicone implants.  From the very beginning, I had a sizeable indentation in the lower, middle part of one breast.  The implant also slid down my side and my cleavage consisted of a boney, concaved space.  I was unhappy and asked my surgeon if fat grafting might correct the dent.  I was told that the fat would not survive.  At that point I researched fat grafting and very quickly came across Dr. Khouri and his innovative procedure to reconstruct breasts using a woman’s own fat.

Using the BRAVA device, the indentation was loosened to provide the necessary space for the fat grafts and in early October, Dr. Khouri began my revision. He exchanged the large implants with smaller ones, did work on the pockets and folds and did the first fat grafting. The second fat grafting was in mid-December along with some more work to improve the folds. The final session was in early March with another round of fat grafting and some finishing touches. The result is absolutely amazing! I would have never imagined that I could confidently wear my two-piece swimsuits again. Now, thanks to the lipo-sculpting which is such a wonderful by-product of this procedure, I am more confident than ever. My breasts look and feel natural and I am actually regaining some sensation. This along with the softening of the breasts is a slow and gradual process so I look forward to even more improvement. I could not be happier and am forever grateful to Dr. Khouri.

I believe this whole process should be seen as a team effort. The patient's adherence with the BRAVA regimen and following the guidelines and directives of Dr. Khouri and his staff, are incredibly important. It helps to have realistic expectations – yes, wearing the BRAVA domes isn't exactly comfortable nor practical but it is necessary. Lipo will be painful for a few days, there will be draining from the puncture sites, and tenderness and bruising lasts for several weeks. Final results from liposuction can take many months. Exercising and a healthy diet go a long way towards a speedy and safe recovery. The wonderful results are worth any inconvenience!
