Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy through Fat Transfer |
|
Share: |
Welcome to the breast reconstruction page of our site. I am here to help you reclaim what’s yours. First of all it is important for you to understand what a mastectomy is. It is the removal of the whole breast.
There are five different types of mastectomy: "simple" or "total" mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy, radical mastectomy, partial mastectomy, and subcutaneous (nipple-sparing) mastectomy. If you are having, or had, any of these types of mastectomy, you might be a candidate for my minimally invasive breast reconstruction technique.
As compared to the traditional methods, it involves no incisions, no new scars, no foreign objects and it recreates a natural feeling breast with the benefit of liposuction, and it’s covered by insurance.
The technique is explained below. Please also visit the Breast Reconstruction Photo Gallery and the Testimonial pages of the site. You’ll have a better idea of how we can help you on your healing journey.
Thank you,
Dr. Roger Khouri

How is micro-fat transfer (fat grafting) used for natural breast reconstruction?
Micro-fat grafting is an implant-free, flap-free breast reconstruction procedure developed by Dr. Roger Khouri. He uses a skilled technique to remove fat from one area and meticulously inject it back as hundreds of tiny individual droplets at the breast defect site. These micro-fat grafts (autologous grafts) are harvested by gentle liposuction from the patient’s thighs, buttocks and stomach–wherever there is fat to spare. The fat then grows within a matrix of tissue and the breasts enlarge ‘naturally’ over three months, while the patient receives the benefit of liposuction.
Is micro-fat transfer (fat grafting) safe?
Dr. Khouri has lead a team of international surgeons in a 5 year clinical trial performing this minimally invasive breast reconstruction technique utilizing the Brava external expansion system and liposuction micro-fat grafts. The study has concluded that micro-fat graft breast reconstruction is a safe and effective procedure. It does not distort the remaining breast tissue or interfere with breast cancer detection. Doctor Khouri has presented the results of this study to several prestigious national and international meetings with great acclaim.
What is the difference between traditional breast reconstruction & micro-fat transfers (fat graftings) using the Brava® System?
There are 2 traditional breast reconstruction alternatives. Both involve major “open” surgery, which means general anesthesia, muscle trauma and new scars. The implant alternative involves the placement of a foreign object such as silicone or saline under the muscle and leads to an artificial feeling breast mound. Implants are not a permanent solution. The flap surgery alternative involves taking a piece of muscle and tissue from the back or the abdomen and using it to rebuild a breast mound. The surgery is extensive, it requires major incisions, a prolonged recovery and the result is like patch work.
With Dr. Khouri’s micro-fat grafting procedure, the patient wears the Brava device, similar to a brassiere that suctions the breast defect area and stretches the tissues. This creates an adequate matrix in which he later injects the fat. The fat is removed from the patient’s body by gentle liposuction and immediately injected into the prepared site. After undergoing a few procedures, the breasts are reconstructed. The procedure is done as outpatient, often under local anesthesia and sedation and has minimal recovery time. As compared to the traditional methods, it involves no incisions, no new scars, no foreign objects and it recreates a natural feeling breast with the benefit of liposuction covered by insurance.
